The Superior Six: Ranking the MCU

Yesterday, I introduced my initial rankings of the twenty one Marvel Cinematic Universe Films. Just like the MCU breaking down their films into phases, I’ve chosen to do the same and introduced that first set as Phase One: The Netflix Nine.

That leaves us today with 12 more films which I’ll rank over the next few days in two more distinct phases. Today, it’s Phase Two: The Superior Six. This set of films ranked #12 to #7 form a solid centerpiece of the MCU and probably reveal a bit more of my cinematic tastes with the way they intersect. Without giving it all way right here let me continue with my rankings

Phase Two: The Superior Six

12 — Ant-Man

In the MCU timeline, Ant-Man fell right after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron which good timing. It’s a heist film. It’s funny, smart, and yes, a bit predictable but that wasn’t a fault in the film. Ant-Man may not be the mightiest hero in the MCU, but without him, we’d smile a lot less.

11 — Iron Man 3

So. Many. Suits. All the Suits. Everyone Wears a Suit. Suitpocolyse. And yet, this was the rawest of the Iron Man films as Tony Stark deals with the demons of the Battle for NYC, and has to figure out his place in this new, bad, broken world.

10 - Doctor Strange

Hello Doctor. Benedict Cumberbatch is an actor I love to watch. He’s so good. But he’s a little odd using an American accent. Nevertheless, this origin story did a great job of bringing the metaphysical realm into play in the MCU. I didn’t love Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One but the film in its scope and beauty was fantastic.

9 - Ant-Man & the Wasp

Oh, hi there again. Weren’t we just talking about you? It’s fun when the sequel is just as good, if not better, than the original. You know what I loved about this film? The villain (Ghost) wasn’t out to kill anyone or destroy the world, she just wanted to be healed. This was a welcome breath of happy after the devastation of Infinity War

8 - Iron Man

The original. This one launched the whole deal. Smart, witty, unexpected, real and great. It made me enjoy super-hero movies on a new level. And Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark was perfect. This film set the bar so high for every other super-hero film to come. “I am Iron Man.”

7 - The Avengers

They did it!! They put four, no wait six, no! EIGHT huge actors/actresses together in one film and it worked. This plot was so sharp and so cohesive to bring the MCU together that it stood out as one of the very best MCU movies. What a conclusion to the first phase, and an appetizer for so much more to come.
