Everything That’s On My Mind (Almost) - December 12, 2012

    1. I’m headed to India… in three weeks. I now understand Bilbo Baggins and the whole “unexpected journey” thing.
    2. Duck Dynasty is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows. I like redneck reality.
    3. It was great fun to be with our friends in California once again. Seven months of separation from people you love so much is not fun.
    4. Two sermons and a long-form article on Advent has me in the Christmas spirit. No hum-bug here.
    5. Have I mentioned lately that I love my job?
    6. I’ve turned 34. I suppose I can have a mid-life crisis at any moment now.
    7. The Leadership Sync with our community group leaders on Sunday was exciting and dynamic. Really appreciate these guys.
    8. I can’t wait to watch Ethan and Allison open Christmas presents. I also can’t wait to play with their Christmas presents.
    9. Peppermint Joe-Joe’s. A blessed cookie for a blessed season.
    10. Pliny the Elder. Redemption. Sanctification. Oh, and the pizza is good too!
    11. I have a deadline and a title for my book that GCD Press is publishing. Now I have to write it.
    12. TOMS are skinny jeans for your feet. I’ll be wearing them in India.
    13. Christ’s words about abiding in Him are amazingly relevant lately.
    14. I’m learning lots from being on the hiring side of a job search. Mostly what not to do.
    15. My wife loves me. I have no doubts of this.

Everything That’s On My Mind (Almost) - October 17, 2012

  1. God has a sense of humor. He has the San Francisco Giants play the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS right in the middle of the marriage series at our church.
  2. My work goes unchanged even though my personal title has changed.
  3. Theodore Roosevelt’s life is absolutely fascinating.
  4. Allison is already thinking about her next birthday.
  5. I want to win the “Golden Goose” award my neighborhood association hands out.
  6. I’ve been pulled over twice by the police in Kansas now. In both instances the car I was driving had Texas plates. I see a common denominator.
  7. “Devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.”
  8. Seeing my children grow up is so much fun. I feel like my home is constantly filled with joy because of them.
  9. I miss these guys.
  10. When does it get cold around here?
  11. It's awesome to hear your two year-old son walking around singing "My soul magnifies the Lord."
  12. I get so frustrated when music snobs condescendingly tell me the music I enjoy is beneath them. Just because a band becomes popular doesn’t mean they’ve lost all artistic ability.
  13. Stephanie has been a culinary genius in the kitchen lately. I’m tempted to propose to her all over again.

Everything That’s On My Mind (Almost) - October 3, 2012

  1. Five years ago today Stephanie and I were watching Shrek 2 in the hospital.
  2. Five years ago today Stephanie underwent a psuedo-epidural.
  3. Five years ago today a baby girl was thrust in to my arms. She stole my heart immediately.
  4. Five years ago today I cried for joy like I never have before and only once since.
  5. Five years ago today Allison was born. I love her with all my heart. Her middle name perfectly describes how God has acted towards me, grace.

Everything That's On My Mind (Almost) - September 12, 2012

  1. I forgot how beautiful the South is. Thanks for reminding me Alabama.
  2. I drove by at least 8 church buildings in a two mile stretch of road in Madison, AL this morning. I don’t think there are 8 churches in most towns of 43,500 in California.
  3. The Avett Brothers are singing to me again.
  4. The Great Siding Siege is over. Our home looks great.
  5. Read The Great Divorce yesterday. Lewis has helped me remember my desires are too weak. Not solid at all.
  6. Put the youth pastor hat back on this last Sunday.
  7. Going 2 for 3 in fantasy football this weekend isn’t too bad. Of course losing to my wife is humbling. I knew she was holding out on me.
  8. Allison’s taking ballet lessons. Unfortunately she wants Ethan to take them too.
  9. I need Jesus’ Double Cure again today. I need it every day.
  10. Seems like a lot of doors are opening up in front of me. I have no idea why but I am excited about it.
  11. I still miss my buddies in Cali.
  12. Looking forward to having the Grey Ghost back. Glad I got to put 2,500 miles last month on a Yaaaaaarrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiissssss.
  13. My wife ages like fine wine. She gets better and better with every passing day.

Everything That's On My Mind (Almost) - September 5, 2012

20120904-220955.jpg

  1. Day 24 of the Great Siding Siege of 2012. That’s twenty days longer than it was supposed to last.
  2. I have Jimmy Graham on all of my fantasy football teams this season.
  3. East Oklahoma is pretty. Central and Western Oklahoma? Not so much.
  4. Ninety students enrolled at Porterbrook Kansas this year. 9–0!
  5. Family Worship Sunday’s are pretty cool. We should do it more often.
  6. The temps are back in the triple digits this week. Summer’s got to stick it to us one last time before the 21st.
  7. J.C. Ryle has an awesome way of making me love Jesus more and more.
  8. The Wells Fargo Dealer Services Fax Machine Fiasco is officially over. A tech from 1989 time traveled into the future to help them.
  9. The Wichita Zoo continues to impress me. I’ve been twice now and still haven’t seen it all.
  10. Stephanie only gets more beautiful, more brilliant, more funny and more kind each day I spend with her.

Everything That’s On My Mind (Almost) - August 29, 2012

  1. I was being “aggressive” when I planned for seventy Porterbrook Kansas students. Apparently God was being more aggressive by sending eighty-six.
  2. Day 17 of the Great Siding Siege of 2012. I had no idea it would take this long to change the external color of my house.
  3. This weekend is my third and final fantasy football draft. I think I have a good shot at winning at least one league.
  4. I don’t have writers block lately — just lots of things going on that keep me from writing.
  5. I have been working out a proposal in my head (and my Moleskine) for a potential book on the forgotten tool in our missional tool belt.
  6. I think I disappointed a few people because I didn’t share my bacon chocolate-chip cookie recipe. You have to remember I didn’t go to kindergarten so sharing and coloring are two extremely hard things for me.
  7. The Old Farmer’s Almanac is freaky. What mad science they concocted to be so accurate is beyond me.
  8. Nebraska should be called North Kansas. It’s just as flat and just as windy. With more corn.
  9. My favorite saying of Ethan’s right now: “I SEE KEEPER! THERE’S MY KEEPER! HI KEEPER!”
  10. I ran down a foul ball for Allison at the baseball game the other night. It wasn’t until after I got it that I realized I probably looked pretty stupid chasing a grown man asking for a ball. She’s worth it!
  11. We’re almost to the end of season 1 of LOST. I think I’m going to force Steph to wait one month before we start a new season.
  12. I can’t wait to preach about Jesus this Sunday!

Everything That’s On My Mind (Almost) - August 22, 2012

  1. I’ve decided that any form of “fish and chips” in a land-locked state is only going to disappoint me.
  2. The double cure of Jesus’ death has moved my heart in worship this week.
  3. About to mark Nebraska and Alabama off my list of States never visited.
  4. I have first-hand experience now at what it is like to be an administrator of a school making a budget based on a set amount of students and then watching to see if that number of students actually enrolls. Nerve-wracking.
  5. It is a sure sign of the decline of our culture that men do not know how to grill meat well.
  6. It is helpful to write and be critiqued. What I think is an amazing article sometimes isn’t.
  7. I am grateful for the season I’m in where I can say “I love my job.”
  8. I hate it when my kids get sick. It makes me sad to see them not feel good.
  9. LOST is just as good, just a surprising the second time around. And probably better too.
  10. I am overly excited about getting published on a website that isn’t my own.
  11. I'm confident The Alumni Association of my college alma mater is posting yearbook photos of students on Facebook as blackmail to get them to donate money. Apparently I haven't paid up.
  12. Sitting around a table having dinner and laughing with community is an under-appreciated gift of grace.
  13. Bacon Chocolate-Chip Cookies are also an under-appreciated gift of grace.

Everything That’s On My Mind (Almost) - August 15, 2012

  2. I am really glad my family is coming home today. I’ve missed them.
  3. Damian Lewis is one of my favorite actors. The show Life is really clever.

  8. God is up to big things. Keeps me dependent and praying much.
  9. Ever wonder what happened to AOL Instant Messenger? Yeah, me neither.
  10. Fantasy football draft this weekend with some local guys. I’m going to throw them off by drafting John Elway in the first round.

Everything That’s On My Mind (Almost) – August 8, 2012

  1. Byword is quickly replacing my standard writing application. Simple. Focused. Better.
  2. My family is literally scattered all over the country today. Girls in California, son in Missouri. I missed the tornado and am stuck in Kansas.
  3. Was reminded of how much I like C.S. Lewis’ The Great Divorce. I’m reading it again.
  4. I’m learning that people who are critical of John Calvin’s views of God’s providence haven’t read John Calvin.
  5. I can’t figure out what this show “Olympics” is all about. Until it shows up on Netflix I won’t be able to talk about it.
  6. I drove through Lawrence, KS yesterday. Do KU students loathe themselves so much that they feel the need to boast about their championship debate team?
  7. Cold front blowing through Wichita. It’s only supposed to be 101º today.
  8. I’m baking my award-winning bacon chocolate chip cookies this week.
  9. It’s humbling to apologize to a 5-year-old.
  10. That boycott of Chick-fil-a isn’t going too well. A new one opens in Wichita tomorrow.
  11. It’s sad to me that youth, beauty and energy are more valued in our culture than age, wisdom and patience.
  12. I can’t wait to preach John 21 in September. So much gospel-goodness in that chapter.
  13. I’m grateful for my readers. Thanks for making my ramblings part of your day.

Everything That’s On My Mind (Almost) – August 1, 2012

  1. Today is my grandmother’s 80th birthday. She’s got a real good shot at 100 if you ask me.
  2. I can only name eight Chicago Cubs players right now. I am a terrible fan.
  3. Last night we launched a new community group. I’m already excited about what God is going to do in, through, and with us!
  4. More people read my sports post than my Hosea post this last week. I will accept the blame. I always knew I was a good sports writer.
  5. Baptisms are a shot of missional adrenaline to the church. Journey the Way had fourteen injections this weekend. I can’t wait to see God save more people so we can do it again soon.
  6. It’s supposed to be 112º on Friday here. That’s only 78º cooler than the temperature that I smoke meat at.
  7. I missed Family Camp last week. This week I learned I’m missing Pasta King at the SoCo Fair. Dang.
  8. Matt Redmond deserves some credit for this format on my blog. Buying one of his CD’s will really encourage him.
  9. A friend and I had a debate on Greek words yesterday. I let him think he won.
  10. Still haven’t seen The Dark Knight Rises yet. Thankfully no one has spoiled it for me either.
  11. I’m accepting requests for things you’d like to see me write about. Please submit your idea or request in the comments below.
  12. My wife is more precious to me today than she was when we first met. So thankful my grandma introduced us!

Everything That's On My Mind (Almost)- July 25, 2012

  2. I’m on vacation for a few days. Don't feel bad if I don't return your phone call.

  5. Wichita’s zoo was great. Certainly more active than the San Francisco Zoo.
  6. There are a few more dates on the preaching calendar for me. Asking me to preach is like giving a fat kid candy.

  8. I’m so glad my grandparents could visit and help me fix things around the house.

  12. I could use about 15 volunteers to help me knock out some projects.
  13. This is Family Camp week for Santa Rosa Bible Church. I really miss hanging out at Hartstone with friends. And the food. At Hartstone.
  14. The business guys in my church told me not to read business books. They told me to read bios of great leaders.  I'm reading a big one on Lincoln right now.
  15. My ordination council is the same weekend as Mizzou vs. Alabama. Think they will let me meet with the council via Skype?

Everything That's On My Mind (Almost) - July 18, 2012

  1. My son is two years old today. Let the reign of terror begin.
  2. Last night Ethan and I read about God calling Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. Holding your son while reading that story opens up an entirely different perspective on it.
  3. My war with Wells Fargo Dealer Services, a fax machine and the Kansas DMV continues. I will not bow to technology that was hip in the 1980’s.
  4. It used to be that Pat and Ron were the two best baseball broadcasters in the business. It’s now Kruk and Kuip.

  11. I’m going to be sad if The Donut Whole is out of maple-bacon donuts this morning.

  2. I have $1.65 left on my Starbucks card. This terrifies me.

  4. Going to see The Amazing Spider-Man tonight. I’m betting Peter Parker gets bit by a radio-active spider and experiences much teen angst.
  5. I won’t be wearing a Spider-Man t-shirt.
  6. I love Josh Carrillo’s passion for Jesus, especially when he preaches. This sermon is one of his best.
  7. Kansas is a big state. It needs many, many gospel-centered churches.
  8. I’m praying that God sends 50 people to be part the Missional Leadership & Theology track of Porterbrook Kansas this year. We need trained leaders to plant more churches.
  9. I’ll find out today if I won the Haddon Robinson Scholarship to work on my D.Min from Knox Seminary. You can watch them announce the winner here.
  10. My in-laws are amazing people. I’m grateful they are so close and come down and paint cabinets on their vacation.
  11. Smoking meat is an anti-depressant.
  12. I invented a new fantasy baseball game.  I lost the first time I played it.
  13. We have a new neighbor. I’m praying we get to tell her about Jesus.
